**New for 2020/21** With over 14yrs grass roots, FIS, EC, World Cup, World Championships and Olympic coaching and competition experience behind us, and having run the British national junior ski & snowboard cross programs for several years, GBX has now launched the full time junior snowboard program. The program will coach every aspect of snowboarding including snowboard cross, park & pipe and all mountain. This is a full time program and juniors can join for two, three or five months. On top of this, we will be running our one week half term camps in October and February – please click here for further details
GBX is owned by Zoe Gillings-Brier and Dan Brier. Zoe is a 4 x TeamGB Olympian who has won 7 World Cup medals including Gold, a mum to two children and a fully qualified BASI snowboard coach. Dan has coached at 2 Winter Olympic Games for TeamGB as well as coaching on the snowboard World Cup circuit since 2009 and is a dad to two children. GBX coaches have a vast amount of experience coaching at all levels of International snowboard competition. One of the real issues we see on an almost daily basis are younger children “specialising” in a certain disciplines at too much of a young age – and this is especially prevalent in British junior snowboarders. This maybe due to the fact we are not a winter sports nation and that as we have less time on snow than our European and North American counterparts – we sometimes think the time we do have on snow should be spent practicing the discipline they enjoy.
However, we fully believe that our junior athletes should receive training in all areas of snowboarding so that they can develop all their snowboarding skills together and then choose to specialise once their combined skill set has progressed. If they progress their snowboarding skiils in the areas they dont like as well as the ones they do, it makes for a much more competent snowboarder.
Our junior program coaches our athletes in all aspects of snowboarding including snowboard cross, park & pipe and all mountain.
A good education is essential in today’s world. Our junior athletes are very aware that if they do not meet their schooling requirements they will be back in the UK in a flash!
At GBX we run a combined education and sporting program, however, in order for this to be successful, the athletes must have a strong and supportive school system back in the UK offering remote learning.
We do not employ teachers but we do employ a house parent as part of our safeguarding responsibilities who is also a teaching assistant. We provide regular and scheduled schooling times in the GBX house around our sporting schedule, provide a 24/7 internet connection dedicated to school/distance learning and our teaching assistant is on hand to assist the juniors 24/7.
At GBX, we take our child safeguarding responsibilities very seriously. Not only are all our staff enhanced DBS checked, but as an organisation we are fully licensed by Snowsport England to provide full time child safeguarding and are fully affiliated Snowsport England club.
As part of our affiliation with Snowsport England, all our staff attend various workshops and courses on child safeguarding and are all First Aid trained. We have many years experiences working with children as both a club and when we ran the British National program and now we are offering this experience to our brand new full time junior snowboard program. Nutrition and fitness is extremely important for World class athletes so we believe it is extremely important for our junior athletes too. During the 3 and 6 month programs we educate our junior athletes in both general nutrition and specific nutrition for sport. We try to show how what we eat and drink affects our body when we are resting, training, competing or recovering from an injury.
Working alongside our nutrition education we run regular fitness sessions too. We may call them fitness sessions but we make sure they are fun too!
